Stop Heating the Wind: 7 Reasons Campers & Hunters Are Packing This 1-Lb-Can Heater This Fall

It throws radiant heat straight at you instead of warming air the breeze carries off, and it screws onto the same little propane can that runs your camp stove.

The sun drops behind the trees and the cold climbs up through your boots. The fire's still going and somebody's halfway through a story from last season, but one by one, people start zipping jackets to the chin and drifting toward the truck.

What's working against them is simple. Heat that works by warming the air has a problem outside: air doesn't stay put. Every breeze picks up the warm air and carries it off before it ever reaches you. Call it the Wind Tax. You burn the fuel, and the wind collects the heat.

So what if the heat skipped the air and went straight to you?

That's the whole idea behind TrailHeat, a compact radiant heater that threads onto a standard 1-lb propane can. Here are seven reasons it earns a spot behind the truck seat this fall.

Same Camp. Same Cold Night.

01Reason

You Get to Stay Out After the Sun Drops

TrailHeat mesh burner going from cold to glowing red

Thread it onto a can, open the valve and press the ignition button. The mesh burner starts to glow red, and the polished dish behind it throws that heat forward at your hands and shins. That's the difference between calling it at dusk and staying for one more round by the fire.

The worry it answers: "A little heater won't do anything outside." It's aimed, so the heat lands on you.

02Reason

It Runs on the Little Can You Can Buy Almost Anywhere

There's no 20-lb tank to fill and no hose or regulator to fuss with. TrailHeat threads straight onto a standard 1-lb disposable propane can, the small green or blue camping cans sold at hardware stores, big-box stores and many gas stations.

That "tiny" can goes further than it looks: about 2 to 8 hours per can, depending on where you set the knob. Low heat stretches it the longest.

The worry it answers: "Fuel is a hassle." It's the same can that runs a camp stove.

03Reason

It Warms You, Not the Air

Diagram: straight-line heat travels from TrailHeat to a camper while a cold breeze blows past

This is how TrailHeat dodges the Wind Tax. It's a radiant heater: the burner's heat travels in a straight line off the polished reflector to whatever it's aimed at. We call it Straight-Line Heat. Radiant heat isn't carried by the air, so a breeze can't blow it off course on the way to you.

Know its range. Aim it at your chair and keep it close: it's built to warm two or three people up close, not a whole open yard. Bigger groups grab the two-pack.

The worry it answers: "Outdoor heaters are useless in the wind." This one doesn't rely on warm air.

04Reason

It Stays Planted When the Wind Picks Up

Unfolding TrailHeat's reinforced base and seating a propane can in it

A heater perched on a tall propane can is one bump away from a wobble. TrailHeat comes with a reinforced base. Its arms fold out wide and the can drops in snug, so the whole unit sits low and steady on gravel, snow or a picnic table.

The worry it answers: "It'll tip." Set it on flat ground and it sits low and wide.

05Reason

It Lights With a Push of a Button

You won't need matches or a lighter. Open the valve, press the ignition button, and the burner catches. In real cold, holding the ignition-assist button helps it light. From there the knob dials the heat up or down.

The worry it answers: "It'll be a pain to light in the cold." It's one button, with an assist for cold mornings.

06Reason

It Packs Into Its Own Hard Case

Packing the TrailHeat heater head into its hard carry case

The heater head, base and wrench pack into a hard carry case with a handle, so it can live behind the truck seat until the temperature drops. Let it cool all the way before it goes back in. Propane cans aren't included because they can't be shipped, so grab one on your next camp-stove fuel run.

The worry it answers: "One more bulky thing to haul." It's one case, and it grabs and goes.

  3. Open the valve and press the ignition button. Turn the knob to set the heat.

Straight Answers

Can I use it in a tent, ice shanty, car or garage?

No. TrailHeat is for outdoor use only. Propane produces carbon monoxide, and this heater has no oxygen-depletion sensor and no automatic tip-over shutoff. Use it in open air: campsites, tailgates, sidelines, docks, patios and open ice. Set it on flat ground with about 3 feet of clearance from people and gear, don't leave it running unattended or while you sleep, and keep kids and pets back, because the reflector and guard get very hot.

How long does one can last?

About 2 to 8 hours, depending on where you set the knob. Low heat lasts the longest.

What's in the box?

The heater head, the reinforced fold-out base, a wrench and the hard carry case. The 1-lb propane can isn't included.

When will it arrive?

Shipping is free. Orders ship within 1–2 business days and most arrive in 5–9 business days. You'll get a tracking link by email when it ships.

Your Spot by the Fire Doesn't Have to End at Sundown

The cold isn't going to wait for a better weekend. TrailHeat runs on a can you can grab anywhere, packs into one case, and throws its heat straight at you. If it doesn't earn its place in the truck, you have 30 days to send it back.
